Donating Money
NLT is facing a severe cash shortage at the start of 2006. Due to changes in major donor organizations and the current political situation in Nepal, we are finding it increasingly difficult to raise much needed funds to continue our work. If our organization is one you'd like to support this year there are many ways in which you can help.
Our income in 2005 has shown a quite exceptional fall. This is probably for two entirely different reasons: (1) World Health Organisation statements that leprosy as a public health problem in Nepal is almost resolved; and (2) the Asian Tsunami, which caused a noticeable downturn in the income of more than a third of all UK overseas charities (public generosity to one cause is inevitably at the expense of others).
Yet each month Lalgadh Leprosy Services Centre (LLSC) is diagnosing more than 100 new cases of leprosy, with many needing our on-going help. Leprosy may have shifted off major grant-makers’ agendas, but these people remain ‘at our door’ and NLT still feels called to help them. They need care now!
We are especially concerned with our preventative work. People with leprosy are often shut away by their families and kept away from public view. They are deeply ashamed: believing it is their own failures (or those of past relatives) that have caused their condition. If they are not found, diagnosed and treated, then the disease may be passed on to other family members. Most ulcers are relatively cheap and straightforward to treat; but if not treated quickly they can lead to the amputation of a finger, toe or limb, and thus a longer period of rehabilitation, loss of potential earnings and greater stigmatisation.
Donations are always preferable as cheques. However the Pay Pal service is available for ease of use. Please contact the UK office for more details and if you are a UK taxpayer, for a Gift Aid form.
Buy an off road bike!
We urgently need off-road bikes for our facilitators and field workers, they cost £925.00 each. Please consider if you give towards our bike appeal.

The Phone Co-op
You can donate 6% of your total phone bill to NLT and... you'll still save money (in order for us to receive the 6% you will need to quote 'agent 233') We have joined up with The Phone Co-op, an ethical and environmentally responsible telephone service provider, to offer our supporters a great deal on their phone calls. The Phone Co-op neutralises all CO2 emissions generated by your phone calls through its partnership with Climate Care www.climatecare.org. By using The Phone Co-op, you save money, help us to raise funds and use a green and ethical telecom provider.
The Phone Co-op (www.thephone.coop) is an ethical and environmentally responsible telephone service provider, run as a consumer co-operative along green and ethical lines. The Phone Co-op is committed to wider change through the development of the Co-operative movement. We trade as much as possible with other co-operatives and we pay a percentage of our profits each year to the Co-operative and Social Economy Fund, which was set up by the Phone Co-op to help fledgling co-ops with start-up costs. In response to customer demand, we have introduced the following packages.
If you choose The Phone Co-op's 1p Anytime package, you'll pay just 1p for every local and national call you make regardless of the time of day or which day of the week it is. This package costs just £10.99 per line per month plus VAT (£12.86), which in comparison to other available packages offers excellent value for money.
If you aren't at home during the day, then our 1p Evenings and Weekends package is probably better for you. Pay just 1p per call for all of your evening and weekend local and national calls (as long as they last less than 1 hour), and if you make calls during the day you'll pay just 2.5p per minute for a national call and 2p per minute for a local call. This package costs just £6.49 plus VAT (£7.62) per line per month.
There is no need to dial a prefix and you'll retain your telephone number together with standard services such as 1471 and 1571. You can also have a free 0845 number enabling friends and family to call you at a local rate.
The Wisdom Trust
You Can Help the Nepal Leprosy Trust Qualify For Bigger Donations.
NLT has recently registered as one of the charities and organisations supported by a new fundraising project from The Wisdom Trust
The Wisdom Trust is an educational charity which aims to create a wider awareness about poverty, the environment and world health, but which also sets aside half of all its income for donations to other charities and organisations.
As one of their supported organisations, NLT is guaranteed a donation of some sort from The Wisdom Trust each quarter, but the size of that donation will relate to our share of the special online vote amongst all The Wisdom Trust’s members, who can vote at least once every day for the two charities they’d most like to receive donations.
Quite simply, the more votes an organisation gets over each three month period, the bigger the donation they will receive. So an organisation with 10% of the vote will get 10% of The Wisdom Trust’s donation fund that quarter.
Friends, staff, and all other supporters of NLT can help us receive a bigger donation in a very simple way. Just by registering themselves, free-of-charge, as friends of The Wisdom Trust, they’ll be able to vote every day, or as often as they can, for NLT - and for one other organisation from the list of supported charities on The Wisdom Trust website. And hopefully, while they’re voting, they’ll be learning more about poverty, the environment and world health through The Wisdom Trust’s special on-screen education programs.
To get on board yourself and add your own votes for NLT, just click on the following link, then fill in the simple online registration form. You’ll only need a valid email address to do so and the whole process will take no more than a minute to complete. Then just log in every day and vote for NLT. You see – we said it was simple!
